Gateway Children’s Services – a lifeline for change

Our new mission statement, “We provide a lifeline for change,”
describes our past, our present, as well as our future. It’s what we
do! Change is the word of the day and 2008 promises to be a year of
exciting challenges and change.

Work is nearing completion on our new home, with plans being
finalized for our move and Open House on Feb. 24. Excitement is
building and efforts to finish and furnish the new facility are
ongoing. Providing a ‘home away from home’ continues to touch the
lives of those we serve, while at the same time enriching our own
personal lives. Our children express their gratitude and in turn, we
feel gratitude for the warmth we receive from knowing we have
made someone’s life just a little bit better.

The Open House, which will be held from 2-5 p.m., will feature tours
of the new facility and a presentation providing information about
the historic building that is our new home. We also will honor Adrian
Arnold, State Representative, Retired, in a dedication
ceremony which will begin at 2:30.

We are grateful for the knowledge and skills of the staff and board
of directors who give of themselves in ways that cannot be
calculated in dollars, but have an impact which can be seen in the
lives of our children.

Santa Visits Gateway

Santa stopped at Gateway. Our children enjoyed the benefits of
Steve Hughes culinary skills and generosity as he and his family
came to Gateway and prepared an awesome Christmas dinner. We
learned a new appreciation of the chairman of our board.

Gifts for the children were provided by several local churches and
individuals. All were most appreciated!

The staff enjoyed lunch prepared by Shelia Albright, Program
Director.

Welcome New Board Members

We want to welcome three new members to our board.

• Charlie Baker,MSSW, Baker &
Company

• Jennifer Nesmith, MBA, Director of
Physician Relations and Marketing,

• Linda Skidmore, BSN Case

Mt. Sterling

Adrian Arnold, Cay Lane, Bill Kilgore,
Nancy Ishmael, and Chairman Steve
Hughes make up the remainder of
our board. The members each bring their own experience, skills,
and heart, combined with the gift of their time to help guide and
direct our agency.

Become a Lifeguard

Our agency recognizes our Lifeguards – individuals whose
donations and contributions help us provide for those whose needs
are greatest.

Your contributions help us provide extra services which our daily
rates do not cover. We need your help to allow us to continue
helping children for many years to come.

Bequests can be made in honor or memory of a loved one, allowing
you to make a lasting tribute to someone who has made a difference
in your life. Visit our web site for instructions on how to donate and
take a moment to view our \‘wish list/’

Gateway Children’s Services offers a variety of rewarding volunteer
opportunities to fit your schedule and interests.

Lobbying Efforts

The General Assembly is in a budget session and the life of our
agency depends on the outcome of its decisions. Our expansion
from 12 to 24 beds presents funding challenges and our base
budget needs have increased. We expanded because the
state needs additional beds and even though we don’t want to – we
turn awa
y many children in need.

We ask your help in this effort as state dollars are less than
anticipated.
Agencies as small as ours, with no endowment, are
particularly vulnerable when talk of cuts and reductions are simply
not acceptable to those of us whose budgets are already stretched
so thin.

Difficult economic times take an enormous toll on families with direct
consequences to their children who all too often bear the brunt that
this additional stress. Tension is often placed on the lives of an
already vulnerable and high-risk population.

Please remember our needs as you speak with your legislators and
officials. We need your help to bring our message to those whose
decisions direct the future. For further information regarding our
lobbying efforts, and what you can do to help, feel free to contact us.
